Lookism refers to judging people based on physical appearance. As the concept of the beauty premium suggests, attractiveness can influence not only confidence but also advantages in employment and career outcomes—often said to amount to a lifetime premium of nearly 30 million yen.
With the evolution of technologies that allow individuals to choose their own appearance—seen in works like Ready Player One—we might expect such tools to transcend genetic limits and break down lookism.
But what is actually happening?
By analyzing popular VTubers, this talk explores how lookism persists structurally within the creative industry and reflects on what designers can and should do within this reality.
